A plantation in Mississipi. It's Big Daddy's 65th birthday and the whole family's back to celebrate. His favourite son, Brick, a former football star with a broken leg; Brick's young, beautiful wife, Maggie the Cat, who is trying as hard as she can to lure her husband away from the bottle and back into her arms; Big Daddy's older son Gooper, whose wife is about to bring into the world the sixth in a line of 'no-neck monsters'; Big Mama, and the grandchildren. Everyone's there to celebrate. But why is there so much talk of the inheritance? What did the doctor tell Gooper that Big Daddy doesn't know?
"What's that smell in this room? Didn't you notice it? Didn't you notice a powerful and obnoxious odor of mendacity in this room?"
